Lexmark opens a new gateway to the world of art with www.print-art.com!
Looking for relevant art sites? Think print-art.com!

Paris, France - 01/03/2001

Lexmark International, Inc. has developed a new website www.print-art.com to make it a unique Internet gateway to the world of art. This site features pages on the partnership between Lexmark and the French Réunion des musées nationaux as well as an exclusive search engine based on a semantic engine developed with the innovative technology of the European software company Arisem.

With over 6,000 art-related websites already referenced and classified, and many more being added every week, the new print-art.com website and search engine are set to become an important research tool in the global art-world. This unique mix of art and technology has already proved to be so popular around Europe that German and Spanish language versions are currently being developed and are set to go on-line in spring.

"Lexmark naturally wanted to create a website that is linked to our passion for printing ideas," said Michel Dermont, Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Printer Division, Lexmark Europe. "When printing did not exist, paintings, and especially church paintings, were used to convey messages and meaning to people who, for the most part, were illiterate. Nowadays, printers and new technologies are used to convey these ideas almost instantly all over the world. Lexmark's desire to be involved with art came out of this age-old need for communicating through the power of images. The
print-art.com portal is a real link to the information highway for users wanting to find and print information on art and an ideal way for Lexmark to bring together art, the printed image and the company's own technological expertise and passion."

Thousands of easily accessible art-sites
The new search engine puts at the web-surfer's disposal a wealth of arts-related web-sites, which have been rigorously selected and classified according to painter, subject, exhibition or school of art. Included in this vast source of easily accessible and relevant information are biographies of some of the art-world's biggest names dating from medieval times to the present day, examples of famous art-works as well as analysis of different artistic movements and traditions. The portal also delivers practical information such as how to buy museum tickets or art supplies and where to get art training or have your painting framed.

A perfect learning tool
The new website will especially benefit the education sector. As the search-engine provides only direct matches to art-related websites and subjects, the site will be the perfect tool for both students and educators around the world.

Effortless art printing from the net
Printing search results off the site is effortless, thanks to Lexmark's technological expertise. A function enables the internaut to print in a pre-formatted layout the list of web pages where he will find the information he is interested in. Each result is documented with a short description of the page's content and the complete address at which it can be found. In this way the web-surfer can easily archive his requests and access the information when required.

Using up-to-the-minute technology
Print-art.com users can obtain the most pertinent and useful search results, thanks to the innovative semantic technology provided by Arisem. The software automatically analyses and classifies content through semantic analysis. To provide accurate results on each request and classify them accordingly, the solution not only returns web pages where there is a direct match but also if there is a nearby concept. For example, a search on "impressionism" will return results where the words "impressionism", "impressionist" or "impressionist painter" are mentioned. It will also return pages talking about painters such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley or Paul Cézanne and pages talking about juxtaposed colours, fragmented strokes or the Salon des Refusés.

About Arisem
Arisem is a leading French software vendor that has developed a unique information management technology based on multilingual semantic analysis that allows an in-depth understanding of documents' meaning. It thus provides
print-art.com users with easy and fast access to a vast, yet well organised source of information related to the art-world. Arisem can be found on the Internet at www.arisem.com.

About RMN
The Réunion des musées nationaux (RMN) was created by the French Government in 1895 to enrich the national art collections through the acquisitions of artwork. As well as the Louvre, the musée d'Orsay and the château de Versailles, smaller museums such as the musée Eugčne Delacroix in Paris or the musée Magnin in Dijon are also included. The Réunion des musées nationaux (RMN) organises international art exhibitions and also produces and offers to the public a large range of products (books, prints, mouldings, jewels, gifts, and of course CD-ROMS). RMN is on the Internet at
